RE: One the road with Water injestion?! - UPDATE

Just wanted to provide an update. I am convinved the problem was water in the intake as many of you thought. I just wasn't aware of the symptoms.
We waited out the rain until Monday morning and finished our trip with a new air filter. Motorhome ran like a top for the rest of the trip.

RE: TV converter box

Feb '09.
The dtv system is in place in many areas. It isn't like they are waiting until the last minute to start flipping the switches. Many channels broadcasted in analog are broadcasted in digital at the same time.
Correct - but many stations are not broadcasting digitly at full power until Feb 09.

RE: One the road with Water injestion?! - UPDATE

I am in Bay City at the rec area. Our destination is Mackinaw City. We are going to attempt to drive there tomorrow. If the problem is indeed water ingestion, we should have no more issues. If we do continue to experience the jerking, we are going to return to Bay City. Hagan Ford here in Bay City has confirmed that they work on F53 chassis. There are no Ford dealers further north (on I-75) that will work on motorhomes.

RE: One the road with Water injestion?! - UPDATE

I had a chance to look closely at the intake tube this morning. I have a 2001 F53 chassis and apparently have a modification to stop water from entering the tube. There is a shroud that surrounds the tube and blocks the front and bottom of the tube. The only open area is behind the tube.
Michigan is supposed to get another 1" to 3" of rain again today so I guess we will stay where we are. Thankfully we are safe and sound in a nice campground. Hopefully we can finish our trip tomorrow when the rain leaves the area.

Kamphiker, Good question, forgot to mention that. No, no engine or transmission error lights.

RE: One the road with Water injestion?! - UPDATE

There's no discernable power loss, or engine miss, just a jerk.

RE: One the road with Water injestion?! - UPDATE

Thanks, jy. Thats what I was looking for.
Now I wonder if I can still make a run for my final destination. I am currently staying in a campground waiting for Monday to take it to a Ford dealer. I was afraid I might be having issues with the brand new transmission that was put into it back in July.

RE: One the road with Water injestion?! - UPDATE

Edouard, I know there is a fix for the ingestion problem. I was trying to learn if my symptoms matched the problem or whether it might be something else. I would have thought that the engine would be missing a lot more instead of just causing a jerk.

RE: One the road with Water injestion?! - UPDATE

It will jerk? If it's a miss, I can't really hear it all the time. There have been a couple of times I thought the engine missed but it's a really, really short miss, I don't see a change in the RPMs on the tach.

One the road with Water injestion?! - UPDATE

I've read about the Ford V10 having water injestion issues but I can't find any post that really describes the symptoms. We've been driving in Michagan today and it has rained all day. We' started experiencing a jerking while criusing. I can't tell if the engine misses or not but if it does, it's very quick like a half a second or less. The jerking is not consistent, we could drive for 10 miles without a jerk and then we'll experience 3 or 4 within a minute. The jerking may be very pronounced and other times you can hardly feel it.
I removed the filer and it was soaked and even had standing water in the cone. Dried it out and went on down the road, 15 min later, the jerking started again. Checked filter again, and while wet, did not have any water standing in it.
Does this sound like a water injestion problem or do I have driveline issues? Its a 2001 Ford F53 chasis if that helps.

RE: Weak Headlights

I'll take your word that lights on a tractor are as bad or worse than a motorhome since you've been there. I'll also accept that mounting the lights higher doesn't help.
That leaves me to believe then that the problem is caused by the vertical distance between your eyes and the location of the headlights - provided your lights are bright, hence no electrical problems. The angle in my motorhome is far greater than it is in a regular passenger vehicle.

RE: Weak Headlights

I agree you want lights low for fog and perhaps driving. But think for a second, in a car, I'm basically looking directly into the head light beam. In a motorhome, at last in mine, I'm sitting way above the head light beam. All I'm saying is take a close look at some semis and judge the position of the their headlights compared to some motorhomes. They are much higher.

RE: Weak Headlights

My headlights are not that great either. I was thinking along the same lines as hwm1939 - that the head lights are too low in position compared to the driver's seat.
Semi tractor headlights seem to be placed much higher than a lot of RV headlights.

RE: Help! Light kit install problems Honda CRV dinghy toad

Agree with others that diodes and grounding to the Honda body are not needed. Run all wires to the motorhome, even the ground wire.

RE: 5er to Class A for the Family. Worth it?

MPG estimate is pretty much right on the money. I drive a 2002 32' Fleetwood Fiesta on a Ford chassis with the V10 and it has plently of power, even when towing a Ford Focus on a dolly and loaded down with passengers and supplies.
Of course, it's not a race car nor a caddy. Accleration will probably be par with what you have now. Ride will probably be harsher as the motorhome is riding on a truck chassis.
I chose a motorhome for the comfort while in motion.

RE: Ford Transmission failure - have questions, need suggestions - UPDATE

Hey all, see there has been some activity since my last post on this thread. Wanted to give you an update so that hopefully someone can learn something.
Monday morning, I nursed the motorhome from the campground to the Ford dealer that was about a mile down the road (I canceled the tow to the RV dealer who told me that they send all chassis work to the Ford dealer anyway). If you recall, I always had first gear so the torque converter was never the issue. The problem is that it wouldn't shift into 2nd.
Well, while gingerly accelerating, I found that it finally did shift into 2nd that morning but it was a very relunct shift and I had to do all sorts of playing with the gas to do it. Then it shifted into into 3rd, and I am beginning to wonder if I lost 2 days of my vacation for nothing?
After the tech took the motorhome for a drive, he reported that I had lost 2nd gear (well, duh!) but that 1st, 3rd and overdrive were fine and that I could have probably made it to Florida (now I'm really po'ed about my vacation being screwed up). He said he knew exactly what was wrong with it. Apparently Ford had made a design change to a sprocket that proved to be troublesome and they ended up going back to the old design. My 2001 R4100 transmission just happened to be one of those that had the bad sprocket. He said, "Switch out the sprocket and I guarantee you that you will never have another problem with it again".
Oh, and the tranny hadn't "vomited" fluid either as some suggested. Dealer said there would be fluid all over the frame and everything under there was dry as a bone.
Well... I knew that I had been severly low on fluid and I was wondering to myself what other things could/would go wrong and I didn't want to keep wondering in the future if the thing would fail on me again. The repair was guaranteed for 12 months/30,000 miles, a brand new transmission was 36 months, 100,000 miles. I went for the new tranny even though I appreciated the mechanic's honesty in telling me that he could fix it for half the amount of a new tranny.
We opted to leave the motorhome at the dealer and proceed in our toad the rest of the way to Florida where we met up with the rest of our party (who had rented a vehicle and left Sunday). We picked up the motorhome on the way back.
It was a pretty stressful trip that left me pretty well stressed out but it's over and everyone made it back safely to Ohio later in the week.
I would like to give kudos to Peach County Ford in Byron, GA for their honesty and excellent service (they kept the motorhome plugged in the whole time to keep the food from spoiling). I would have no problems taking a vehicle there for service. I am in no way affilaited with said dealer.
I'd also like to give kudos to Dunedin RV resort who gave me a full refund of my deposit without even being asked even though their policy states that refunds are not available when canceling 7 or less days before your reservation.
Again, I am in no way affialted with said camprgound.

RE: Ford Transmission failure - have questions, need suggestions - UPDATE

I always had 1st gear and reverse when the problem started, just couldn't get it to shift into 2nd and up when we pulled out of a rest stop. Prior to that, it didn't want to shift into 2nd after gassing up about 100 miles earlier but did with a little bit of coaxing.
I did put in 5 qts yesterday. Couldn't tell if it was still under/overfilled since there was fluid in the dip tube from putting the new fluid in. But I was able to coax it into 2nd and 3rd by playing alot with the gas pedal and shifter and we got 5 more miles down the interstate to the next exit which is where I had Good Sam tow me to my present location.
If the transmission did burp fluid out, wouldn't there be evidence of that? I can't see any sign of fluid anywhere except some grimy liquid on what I think is the parking brake behind the tranny.

RE: Ford Transmission failure - have questions, need suggestions - UPDATE

Sounds like most of you agree the dealer is the better way to go. Ok, I can understand that opinion. But how do you get a rebuilt transmission with HD parts from a Ford dealer when it seems some of you feel the original transmission is junk?
Thanks for the comments so far. I am trying to make the best of it, Monday can't come soon enough.
